A dental crown restores a tooth that may be damaged, flawed, or weakened.
Crowns fit over the entire tooth, starting at the gumline to restore a tooth’s shape, size, strength and appearance.
What flaws does a crown cover?
- A misshapen tooth
- Anchors a dental bridge
- Covers a tooth requiring support due to a large filling
- Covers an implant
- Masks stains or discolouration
- Protects and stabilises a tooth after a root canal
What happens during the appointments?
At your first appointment, your dentist will use a local anaesthetic and prepare the area for the crown by reshaping the tooth.
Then your dentist makes an impression of the area and sends it to the dental lab. The dentist installs a temporary crown so you can chew and eat normally before your permanent crown arrives.
At your second appointment, your dentist removes the temporary crown, and fits and cements the permanent crown in place.
What benefits do crowns offer?
- Protection from further decay, infection and fracturing
- Long-term durability
- An improved, natural and healthier smile
- Improved speech
- Improved chewing for a varied diet
